Uninstalling TeleNav for Sprint HTC EVO

I just loved Sprint navegation in my EVO4G. Helped me out of so many jams when I needed to get places the swiftest way, no confusion, FOOLISHLY, I "upgraded" to thie new telenav thing, which has proven to totally "downgrade" my experience. I see some people have uninstalled this new version and gotten back to the good ole Sprint Navegation--Could someone PLEASE detail me how to do that? BTW- Here's why I hate this new telenav deal:
1. This new app picks out crazy routes to get where I want to go--it says I can choose how to get somewhere- but, Hey, I don't know the best way- that's why I'm using the app! Sprint Navegation would just pick the route and I got there the best way always, with an option to reroute away from traffic if I wanted. I don't know if it was the fastest or most convenient- it sure was very California- part freeway- part street . I don't know what this new program is doing.
2. The Voice recognition sucks major big time- instead of East L A it was sending me to an airport in Maine! I tried like 5 times to get directions to my next work assignment- didn't work either by voice nor typing it in- and it's a court house, not like some unknown place.
3. No interaction with humans to fine tune the search or address. There is no way now to call telenav as there was before with a difficult to get address - to voice in the address and then they would send it in your favorites. They would also find places that wouldn't come up in their search.- how many times did THAT help me running around the vastness and variety of Southern California?

Today I had to get basically from East to North LA- it gave me a route through east jepip and by the freeways it was using I knew it was way out of the way, so I started looking for the freeway I knew nearby- It rerouted me to an street route that said 17 minutes...but it took me over a 1/2 hour!
Also- it is less hands free than the old version, especially since it is so frustrating an d you have to keep repeatiung and repeating- it's dangerouisly distracting.
I want my sprint navegation back. I want to uninstall this new guy, and if I can't, I want to findsome other gps program for the EVO 4G.

I’m very sorry about the problems our product has been giving you. While we try our best to make our product exceptional, we realize from time-to-time it may make a mistake. I sincerely apologize about this. With that said, I would, however, like to thank you for taking the time to write out all of your feedback. Please be assured that I’ll be passing on your entire message to the team that worked directly on this version for the EVO.

In order to get the new version removed from your phone, you’ll need to re-flash your device. Unfortunately, this can only be done at Sprint retail stores. Once re-flashed, you’ll have access to the original version of Sprint Navigation available on your device. Please note that you should not downloaded new versions when prompted to.

Please let me know if there’s anything I can assist with.

    Best,
    Christopher S.

I hate the TeleNav GPS on my evo as well. Sprint Navigation was awesome. Now that I have upgraded my phone to Gingerbread and this stupid app replaced my beloved Sprint Navigation it cannot be closed out. I exit the app but it continues to run and run and run until I have to restart my phone just to turn the stupid app off. It also gives me wrong direction more than twice so far. I really want to get this thing off my phone asap!!

  • Hi there, I do apologize about the issues this version may be causing.

Like our original poster above you will have to have the device re-flashed to remove the updated version. To get this done simply take your device into any Sprint retail store and request that your device be re-flashed.

Please let me know if there was anything else we can help with.

    Best,
    Chris

My navigation has completely stopped working now and tech support is telling me that this app isn't even compatible with my EVO. What are you stupid? It's the app for the damn phone it replaces the original sprint app so what after we reflash? We can never update again? So we'll be stuck with old maps for the rest of the time with these phones? Why should we have to factory data reset? Fix the piece of crap app....or remove your services from sprint and shove it...I'm so pissed with the attitude I got over the phone and think its pretty stupid we are being told factory reset our phones over a faulty app....like the others said this app was not as good as the sprint original in the first place and is a move sprint never shoulda made. Your faulty app should be fixed by YOU not us. What kinda customer support is this? It's obvious your product is not satisfying the consumer so doesn't that mean somethings gotta be done on your end......everyone needs to write sprint and complain about this Telenav crap and get the original sprint nav back...its still on other phones

  • I went to a Sprint corporate store and asked them to flash my phone to remove the Telenav as advised by this customer support (because I couldn't stop the power drain from Telenav preloader when it wasn't needed or desired . I use the navigation every other day but its on 24/7 and I am noticing power drops too fast . ) Sprint said their policy is not to flash any phone and they refused saying it is a Telenav problem& not Sprints fault .Now what ?

Now - AS YOU PROBABLY NOTICED - WE ARE NOT HAPPY WITH TELENAV! This is giving me another reason to root my phone. It is MY PHONE. MINE! I am paying Sprint for service but THIS IS MY PHONE.,,,so don't just upload any APS that we dont want without OUR permission because this is MY PHONE.

So, now I figured out what has been draining my battery like there is no tomorrow. I can not keep the battery for more than a few hours and it is the second brand new battery that has been put into the phone. Sprint - Stand behind Apps that you install with software upgrades, and fix it if there is a problem. TeleNav fix your stupid useless, misguiding, power draining app.

Chris I see you have stopped your replies. No since in explaining again what every one else has. PLEASE get with sprint and or do what is needed to get this app off our phones. The app drains battery, cost time and money, and is easily out classed by Google Nav, Sprint Nav, and maney others. Quit pushing the problem off on some one else, you know damn well the app could be updated with the option of being turnd off. In a world going green, your company is a disgrace!

    • Hi Thomas - Thanks for your patience and apologize about the inconvenience. Right now, I'm looking into if Sprint has changed their policy and will certainly get back to you.

Hi Deb - I'm really sorry about that. May I ask what you were charged for? The only thing I could think you would be charged for is if you unknowingly upgraded to our premium features.

      Best,
      Kenji
    • Yes that was the upcharge...and there shouldn't have been. I didn't even want this SOO. I liked sprint mac. Your app suddenly took over my phone and gave me no option but you and started charging me without me realizing it when I already have full coverage for anything data. Absolutely dumb that you don't have a way for us to uninstall this app.. its our bloody phones and its our right to uninstall if we want! Make that possible!

Just wanted to let you know that your piece of crap app is the thing that's convinced me to root my EVO. My EVO already HAD navigation that worked great. Why do I need to deal with your terrible third party software and not even have the option to remove it from MY phone?

JUST GIVE US THE OPTION TO REMOVE THE SOFTWARE AND YOU WON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH ALL THESE ISSUES!!!!

Just wanted to mention that if I actually *wanted* this stupid effing TeleNav on my phone, I couldn't even buy it through the website because it appears that it's not offered for the Evo 4g. SO WHY IS IT ON MY PHONE?
    • Hi Eric,

Did you recently install Android 2.3 on your phone? If you did, then in that upgrade, TeleNav GPS Navigator was included in it. With that said though, you should be able to uninstall the the update and roll back to Sprint Navigation 2.8 by going to: Settings > Applications > Manage applications > TeleNav GPS Navigator > Uninstall Updates.

I understand your frustration, Eric, and I'll be sharing your feedback with our team. Once again, I'd like to apologize for your experience.

Calling Sprint tomorrow to kill telenav until its fixed or I will be end Sprint contract .. using my old.magellan works better with older info than telenav 90% of ti.me . North Korea and Iran should be given Free Telenav to guide their missiles . Prank gps app ha ha .

You may wanna try this if you haven't upgraded your Android to 2.3,
    - Settings
    - Applications
    - Manage Applications
    - Highlight Telenav
    - Select Uninstall Update

Doing so will revert the app back to the preloaded Sprint Navigation that came with your EVO.

  • Sprint EVO 4G, all updates already applied - Now I can't uninstall or even disable Telenav! It is hogging my resources (mostly my storage space, which has fallen dangerously low that my phone has become unusably sluggish). For all intents and purposes, I feel that it has ruined my phone. I have a lot of apps that I use frequently, and I don't want to uninstall apps that I *use* when I can uninstall Telenav (which I don't use at all).

It's gotten so bad it makes me want to go back to an iphone. To think I really loved my EVO before all this.

If you could in any way instruct me on how to remove it. No, the "uninstall" button on the manage apps folder is not highlighted and cannot be pressed.

  • I’m angry and disappointed
    Hello,
I also have a Sprint EVO4G, and since the update, my battery life no longer lasts thru a work-day, where before it lasted longer than one. Prior to TeleNAV being installed to compete w/ the flawless Google Maps app that is free and you can uninstall; this application always seems to run. I tried manage applications as above posters suggest, but do not have option to "Uninstall Updates" to revert. it seems if i to Settings -> Applications -> "All" tab -> click into Telenav, then choose "Force STOP" and "Clear Data" it doesn't show up in "Advanced Task Killer". I have set it to auto-kill your app every 1 minute, which is a crappy workaround. I may perform a backup then root my phone just to spite you and remote this malware from my phone. Please update your app to include uninstallation option, and you'll convert me into a non "angry and disappointed" customer. I blame Sprint and TeleNAV equally, as they chose to include this app in their mandatory and only updates, while you developed it without a remove option.

    Hey angry TeleNav peeps,

While there is no way to uninstall this terrible product without rooting your phone, there is a way to stop it from overriding Google Maps. I did it on my phone a couple months ago and another guy on here fixed his phone with this method yesterday. I am not sure if all Android phones are the same. (I have and EVO 4G and so does the other guy that this method worked for)

    1. I went into the Settings>Applications>Running Services
    2. Press the TeleNav and then press STOP
    3. I deleted and reinstalled Google Maps (I don't know if it was necessary)
    4. I restarted my phone and Google Maps was working again.

If you want Sprint Navigation back, you will most likely have to un-install the update that changed from Sprint Navigation to TeleNav...Not the best idea though.

I figured I would share this useful tid-bit with everyone else since the clowns with TeleNav can't or won't help us out!

  • I’m BEYOND PISSED
This worked for me as well... thank you all so much. I was about to break this damn phone.
I also accidently chose TeleNav and it just became my default. It is absolute garbage. Voice recognition is 100% un operational. You have to have the exact address (you can’t just put in the company name or anything) and even if you search for the location in Google maps (or your browser) and find the address and chose DRIVE TO, TeleNav will ALWAYS tell you ‘location not found’. It’s absolutely the worst app I’ve ever had – and really annoying because I’ve been unable to use my GPS for the last 2 months thanks to this ‘upgrade’. And even if you HAPPEN to have the address, and it HAPPENS to find it, it will take you so far out of your way. It tried to add 20 miles on to my trip this morning, instead of getting directly on the north bound highway I needed to be on (that I was parked RIGHT in front of...), it routed me to a west bound highway 10 miles away and then would have me get on the north bound... 10 MILES AWAY from where I initially started!!! And please understand that it’s not just obnoxious, it’s downright dangerous to try to use this app. Its absolute shiit. People mess up, that’s just life. But how dare you release this waste of storage space, fail to test it, and then not provide the damn option to uninstall it? Unacceptable. TeleNav developers.... you all need to be fired, out of a cannon, and in to the sun. Period.

  • Hi Merlin,

I'd love to know more about what's going on. Can you let me know what version of our app you're running and what kind of resources it's using? Our app runs in the background to improve loading performance, much like many apps on Android including Google’s own software. Although it's running, it does not perform any tasks while in background mode unless you are actively navigating to a destination - so there should be no impact to battery longevity.

You shouldn't be experiencing any excessive resource problems, but if you are, I will certainly be looking into it further.

Can you provide me with some more information so I can better understand what might be occurring? Please let me know:

    - Your phone & carrier (Sprint, right?)
    - The version of Android you're running
    - The version of our app you're running

    Best,
    Kenji
    • Kenji

      Samsung Galaxy Epic 4G
      Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
And Whatever version of the app rolled out with the Gingerbread update.

I'm serious, this app alone is going to be a deal breaker for me. I'm considering leaving sprint if it's going to be included on ALL of their android devices.........I just don't understand how you people (Telenav & sprint) can do this. I BUY a phone, and PAY for service. Yet, I have to have this software loaded onto my phone, for the honor of being on sprint's (Not Right Now Network). Android is open source, yet you people see fit to lock it down for the end user.........I may have to Root.........to hell with this.

  • Kenji, I am just like the others on this board. While TeleNav hasn't completely taken over my Navigation (I prefer Google), it is still draining my battery. I am certain that it is from TeleNav as I recently upgraded to Gingerbread, "mistakenly" hit TeleNav the next day, and ever since, my battery dies in 6-8 hours, instead of the 2 days I used to get.

You stated, "Our app runs in the background to improve loading performance, much like many apps on Android including Google’s own software. Although it's running, it does not perform any tasks while in background mode unless you are actively navigating to a destination - so there should be no impact to battery longevity." This can't possibly be true. A) It's running - therefore it is consuming the battery. B) As a "navigation app" - isn't it also actively pinging the phone's GPS for location data - consuming even more of the battery?

We just want a tool to remove TeleNav from our phones because it's killing our batteries. If our phones were plugged in all the time, there'd be no problem. But you guys forgot that we're mobile. If the phone battery dies, even 911 is not available. If anything happened where my life is in danger and I can't call for help because TeleNav killed my battery, I'd sue TeleNav if I survived.

Please simply provide a solution that removes everything TeleNav from our phones.

  • I’m frustrated and sad
Seriously? (come on, say it with the right tone :-)) This has been going on for almost a year. Thanks Kenji for making some effort, but this app clearly has CAUSED serious problems FOR A YEAR. I have the same issues as above - to summarize 1) now causes a UI crash about 1 in 4-5 uses. 2) sucks the life out of battery, and 3) there is a pop-up option now instead of going to google Nav.

Ok, "schtick" happens you tried and missed...and software then evolves. No problem - people get that, but you also FORCE INSTALL the thing in a way that can't be uninstalled? (again, "Seriously?") Why is that, really, why? Then don't provide any kind of real solution in over a year - other than "go to the store and flash your phone". I'm being forced to look into rooting my phone in hopes that I can find a way to simply remove it. How about an update that allows it to be removed (like all other apps)?

Thanks to the people that have posted work-arounds - I have some hope. Shame on Sprint for not really taking the lead, owning the problem, and providing a real solution.

  • Well, it's been a year since this question was posted and it's obvious that the option to remove this app will never happen.

What is the point of this company anyway? Android is made by Google, which produces the best maps/navigation software on the planet. Why try to trick users into using your vastly inferior product? I get that you want to make money, but to not even give us a choice to remove this piece of crap from MY phone infuriates me.

Kenji, you're either really good at playing dumb or a liar. The real answer to everyone's question here is this: TELENAV WILL NEVER PROVIDE AN OPTION TO UNINSTALL.

  • I found the perfect solution to get rid of telenav...Permanently! The same day my EVO contract expired, I bought the iPhone 4S and guess what?! NO TELENAV!!!! I do miss some aspects of my EVO (but after two years, it just was not the same phone as it was when I bought it). Telenav is now just another app that I chose not to download and have no use for and don't have to be bothered by it ever again. Good luck with these jokers at telenav who really don't seem to care much about their customer service OR their sub-par products!

I just uninstalled it in seven steps:
    1. Click Menu button
    2. Click "Settings"
    3. Click "Applications"
    4. Click "Manage applications"
    5. Click on the TeleNav GPS Navigator
    6. Click "Force Stop"
    7. Click "Uninstall Updates"

  • Add one more to those unhappy to have this pre installed on his phone. I've been unhappy with telenav for a year now and just Googled the problem to find this thread.
